Your computer is very slow

Can a tune-up help your computer?   Yes!  I have helped speed up many computers.   Recently, I checked the effects on one client’s computer.

IE8 and Firefox load times went from over 2 minutes to 6 seconds after a recent tune-up.   This computer had no malware or viruses.  Results vary, but most computers benefit from tune-ups.  It’s your time you save.

  1. Has it always been slow?  You likely need more RAM.  This is easy to install, but you need to get the correct RAM.  Windows XP should have at least 1GB of RAM to run well.
    • Check the RAM, right click on My Computer, choose properties, this sceen should show you the RAM.  256 KB, 512 KB, 1GB are examples.  1 GB is preferred.
  2. Slow computer can mean a failing hard drive.  Do you hear unusual noises, especially, click, click click.  If this could be the problem, do a backup immediately.  If the computer will not start up, you may need data recovery.
  3. You may have a virus or Trojan slowing your computer down.   Usually, you will have lots of annoying pop-ups.  Download and run Malwarebytes Anti-Malware.  If nothing shows up, you probably don’t have an infection.  If it does, clean it up.  See if this fixes the problem.
  4. If the problem persists, you may need help if you have data you want to save.    If you have not data, just reformat and re-install everything.
  5. If you have data, pictures, etc. and no backup, make a backp, or call for help.
  6. You may see a demand for payment to remove a Trojan or virus.  Don’t do it.  Try Malwarebytes Anti-malware, if you can download it.  That may remove the problem.  If you cannot get it to run, call for help.  These can be difficult to remove.
